7 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Officiant

Your wedding ceremony is one of the most important moments of your life, so it’s important to hire an officiant who is the right fit for you. We spoke with veteran wedding officiant and owner of Sensational Ceremonies, Rev. Glynn Ferguson to get the scoop on choosing your officiant.

Here are 7 questions to ask your wedding officiant to help you make the best decision:

  1. What do you do as an officiant?

This is a good first question to ask to get an understanding of the officiant’s role and responsibilities. Officiants can vary widely in their experience, style, and religious or secular beliefs. It’s important to find an officiant who shares your values and vision for your ceremony.

2. Tell us about your experience as an officiant.

How many weddings have you officiated? What types of weddings have you done? What are your strengths and weaknesses as an officiant? Asking about the officiant’s experience can help you get a sense of their comfort level and expertise.

3. What’s your process for creating a wedding ceremony?

Do you create a personalized ceremony or use a standard template? How much input will we have in the ceremony? Will you help us write our own vows? The officiant’s process for creating a ceremony can give you a good idea of how involved they will be in planning your special day.

4.  Are you able to perform rituals that are important to us?

If you have specific cultural or religious rituals that you want to incorporate into your ceremony, make sure to ask the officiant if they are able to perform them. This is especially important if you are having an interfaith or intercultural wedding.

5. How long are your wedding ceremonies?

How long do you think our ceremony will take? This is an important question to ask to make sure that the officiant’s style and timing matches your vision for your ceremony.  Officiants should honor your wishes to make a beautiful ceremony that fits into your timeline.

6. What are your fees?

Officiant fees can vary widely, so it’s important to get an estimate upfront. Be sure to ask about any additional fees, such as travel or meal fees.

7. Do you meet the legal requirements for an officiant in our state?

Each state has different laws about who can officiate a wedding. Make sure to ask your officiant if they are legally authorized to perform weddings in your state.

By asking these questions, you can get a better understanding of the officiant’s experience, style, and fees. This will help you choose the right officiant to officiate your special day.
