Intimate Wedding Checklist: What Not to Forget on a Tight Budget

Planning an intimate wedding on a tight budget doesn’t mean your wedding day has to feel small. In fact, some of the most meaningful weddings are the ones where couples focus on what truly matters to them rather than trying to recreate a traditional wedding.

After 14 years and thousands weddings, we’ve seen couples find creative ways to have a beautiful, personal wedding without spending a fortune. I’ve also seen a few things get forgotten along the way. Here is my intimate wedding checklist of things you absolutely don’t want to overlook.

☐ Get Your Marriage License

This may seem obvious, but couples forget their marriage license all the time.

That’s why it’s one of the first things we discuss when the planning process begins. Your ceremony can be beautiful, your flowers can be perfect, and your photographer can be ready—but without the marriage license, you have a problem.

Put getting your marriage license at the top of your checklist and make sure you understand the requirements and timing for obtaining it. If you’re getting married in Florida, our Florida marriage license guide can help you get started.

☐ Plan Your Transportation

With an intimate wedding, transportation can sometimes be an afterthought.

Don’t let it be.

How are you getting to your wedding location? Are you arriving together or separately? Who is driving? Where will you park? If you’re having a destination wedding, how will you get from your hotel to the ceremony?

These details may seem minor, but having transportation figured out ahead of time can eliminate unnecessary stress on your wedding day.

☐ Make Your Flowers Work Twice

One of my favorite budget-friendly ideas is to repurpose your ceremony flowers for the reception.

Your floral arrangements don’t have to serve one purpose and then sit unused. Move them to the reception area and get more value from what you’ve already purchased.

And if you don’t want ceremony flowers at all, consider something simple and fun. Rose petals can add a little pizzazz to your first walk down the aisle as husband and wife.

☐ Think Outside the Flower Box

You don’t have to use fresh flowers for every bouquet and boutonniere.

I’ve seen a bride use copies of pages from her favorite books to create paper flowers for her bouquet and the wedding party’s boutonnieres. It was personal, creative, and completely different from a traditional floral arrangement.

The best part? The flowers told a story about her.

That’s exactly what an intimate wedding should do.

☐ Protect Your Photography Time

If you’ve hired a photographer for a specific amount of time, your photography timeline is extremely important.

One of the easiest ways to protect that time is to make sure your ceremony starts on schedule. You don’t want delays to eat into the time you’ve reserved for family portraits, couple’s portraits, wedding party photos, and all those candid moments you’ll want to remember.

If your photographer has limited coverage, consider keeping your ceremony short and meaningful. A heartfelt ceremony doesn’t have to be a long ceremony.

☐ Add Personal Touches Without Spending a Fortune

Some of the most memorable wedding details cost very little.

Ask someone special to you to do a reading during the ceremony. Wear jewelry that belonged to someone who had a profound impact on your life. And even if you’re having a very intimate wedding, don’t feel like you have to skip traditional moments that are meaningful to you.

If you want to have a short dance with your father or mother, have the dance.

Your wedding doesn’t have to follow a particular formula.

☐ Remember Whose Wedding It Is

This one is important.

Parents often want the best for their children. Sometimes that means they want their children to have everything they wanted in their wedding.

But this isn’t their wedding.

It’s yours.

Take their advice, listen to their ideas, and appreciate their love—but ultimately, make decisions based on what represents the two of you.

Put your personality into your ceremony, your reception, your music, your traditions, and even the things you decide to leave out.

☐ Don’t Forget to Enjoy the Day

Finally, here’s the most important item on my checklist:

Get plenty of rest the night before.

Then, when your wedding day arrives, enjoy it.

Don’t let the stress of planning overwhelm the euphoria of becoming husband and wife. You’ve spent weeks, months, or perhaps longer making plans. Once the day arrives, give yourself permission to stop worrying about every little detail and enjoy the people and the person standing beside you.

Hopefully, you’ll only do this once in your lifetime.

Make it count.

Your intimate wedding doesn’t need to be expensive. It needs to be meaningful, personal, and uniquely yours.
